Internship Opportunity

As an Intern at LabKey, you’ll undertake challenging projects designed to offer both hands-on educational experience and valuable exposure to LabKey’s technologies, practices, procedures, clients and culture. You’ll be paired with a technical mentor to lead the way while you tackle well-matched projects that allow you to collaborate and create. As an integrated member of the product team you will work shoulder to shoulder with our talented Software and Test Engineers, Technical Writers, Program Managers, and Business Leaders. You will support various clients including Just Therapeutics, Oxford University, the Allen Institute for Cell Science, and more.

In this position, you’ll fully experience the software development process and will contribute to furthering global research while strengthening your own knowledge base. You will gain experience producing sustainable open-source code, developing software in a professional environment, collaborate with a dynamic multi-disciplinary team, gain experience in agile methodologies and own daily scrum management. You will also gain experience interfacing with researchers and bioinformaticians to ensure the product being developed meets their unique needs and workflows.

The Program

Interns are paired with an experienced developer to learn the LabKey ecosystem and the team’s development processes. This is real-world work experience in which interns are expected to perform at a fully functional level quickly.

The program is flexible with a customizable schedule, but LabKey generally expects 2-3 months of full time employment in the summer, with the possibility for continuation of a part time internship based on business needs and intern availability.

Students currently pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Informatics or a related field.  Sophomore or junior class standing preferred.

Strong foundation in object-oriented design and coding, including solid experience with at least one object oriented language (Java preferred), proven knowledge of web-based technologies (e.g., React, Redux, TypeScript, jQuery, other JavaScript frameworks, Bootstrap, HTML, CSS, JSP, AJAX) and experience with web application development tools and relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.) preferred.

Possess an understanding of modern software development techniques, including the full SDLC, object-oriented design, version control, and agile methodologies. Good interpersonal and communication skills; works well with others as a part of a team and the ability to work in an extremely collaborative environment.

Must be a self-starter and have the aptitude to learn from existing documentation, web-based tutorials, colleagues and trial and error.

The Process

LabKey works primarily with the iSchool at the University of Washington and UCSD.  A limited number of non-iSchool and -UCSD applicants will be invited to apply each January.  LabKey typically has only one or two internship roles open each year and is extremely competitive.  Applicants submit a resume for consideration, the top 10-15 finalists will receive a timed coding challenge and successful candidates will be invited for an in-person interview.  Students from outside of LabKey’s targeted schools may submit an application to for consideration.
