We are looking for a Manager of Systems Engineering to join our team!
We are seeking a mission-driven Manager of Systems Engineering with a passion for quality and compliance to lead our Systems Engineering Team. As our Manager of Systems Engineering, you will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and own the design, deployment, and operation of our cloud-based SaaS infrastructure. You will lead a small team of two engineers while remaining hands-on, delivering reliable, secure, and compliant solutions for our SaaS customers.
Our ideal candidate is an individual contributor interested in gaining leadership experience and growth as an emerging leader, who will be responsible for:
Cloud Infrastructure
- Own and operate cloud infrastructure in close partnership with the CTO.
- Lead infrastructure change initiatives, including planning, implementation, and operations, balancing trade-offs and competing constraints with sound judgment.
- Effectively gather requirements, evaluate options, and engage stakeholders on design and deployment.
- Forecast and manage cloud infrastructure costs, balancing performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Design and deliver pragmatic technical solutions, from targeted scripts to scaled automation.
- Operate and sustain production systems, prioritizing identified risks, problem-solving, and improvements.
- Lead incident response, on-call rotations, and continuous improvement of operational practices.
Compliance
- Maintain compliance with regulatory, contractual, and policy-driven security requirements.
- Ensure systems are secure, highly available, reliable, and resilient for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Own and support audit processes related to infrastructure and data security.
Customer Engagement
- Assist LabKey customers and sales prospects in evaluating LabKey solutions and satisfying their organizational cybersecurity requirements.
- Advise customers on architecting their on-premise or hybrid deployments.
Team Leadership
- Mentor and coach team members to build technical capability, trust, and ownership.
- Ensure the team proactively coordinates with other cross-functional teams to align priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Contribute to a feedback-driven culture by actively giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Required Background, Skills and Abilities
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, information technology, computer science, software engineering, or similar.
- Eight years of work experience in a team environment, delivering SaaS solutions to customers with compliance requirements.
Technical Abilities
- Five years designing and managing SaaS cloud infrastructure in AWS, such as RDS, EC2, Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, etc.
- Five years of configuring, managing, and querying relational databases, ideally Postgres.
- Five years of active involvement in selecting, adopting, and maintaining supporting systems, including:
- Monitoring, such as Datadog, StatusCake, and CheckMK.
- Continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD), such as TeamCity and GitHub Actions.
- Infrastructure-as-Code and automated deployment, such as Spacelift, CINC/Chef, and Terraform/OpenTofu.
- Five years of writing scripts in languages such as Python, Ruby, bash, etc.
- Three years building, deploying, and operating Linux containers, such as Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS, etc.
Compliance and Regulated Data Experience
- Two years working within regulated environments such as SOC2, FISMA, HIPAA, ISO 27001, etc.
- Managing Protected Health Information (PHI) data.
- Comfort in building and meeting SLAs with customers.
Project and Change Management Experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Highly organized, self-directed, and accountable.
- Adept at collaboratively troubleshooting issues to assess root causes and choosing pragmatic remediations.
About the Role
- Hourly pay range: $65.00hr – $74.50hr
- Hybrid work schedule: Two days a week in the Seattle office
- LabKey does not provide visa sponsorship
