Last week, members of the LabKey team took a break from the office to attend the 2016 Value in Cancer Care Summit, hosted by our partners at the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research (HICOR). The summit serves as a forum for individuals from across the healthcare spectrum to convene and collaborate on ways to improve the value and efficiency of cancer care delivery. The event included an introduction to HICOR’s methodology for evaluating costs and an overview of regional cost metrics presented by Fred Hutch’s Scott Ramsey, MD, PhD, as well as a series of intervention working groups where patients, clinicians, and researchers came together to discuss how best to improve care in the areas of end-of-life intervention, breast cancer surveillance intervention, and hospitalization during treatment intervention.
Attendees also got the opportunity to explore HICOR IQ, HICOR’s database of population-based cancer incidence, survival information, and insurance claims data that gives regional partners continuously updated reporting of trends in oncology. With HICOR IQ, users can select their metrics of interest and configure plots based on regional or clinic views, as well as breakdowns by age, cancer site, or stage. HICOR IQ is a LabKey Server-based application that was developed by LabKey in collaboration with HICOR.
Hearing first hand about the challenges being faced in cancer care helps the LabKey team better understand how we can provide tools to help solve them. We are looking forward to seeing the impact of HICOR’s great work as they harness the power of integrated data to help improve cancer prevention, detection and treatment in ways that will reduce the economic and human burden of cancer—ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients.
