Managing Non-Human Primate Medical Records at the Oregon National Primate Research Center

Wayne A. Borum, Information Systems Manager, Oregon National Primate Research Center

The maintenance of a large colony of non-human primate research and breeding animals requires a sophisticated computer application to manage a wide range of interrelated health care data and animal husbandry information, as well as administrative and billing records. The LabKey Server SDMS Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) module provides the foundation for creating a comprehensive records system for managing our animal data on an individual and colony-wide basis. This presentation will provide a brief overview of how we have implemented the LabKey EHR module at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.

LabKey’s EHR Module Fits ONPRC’s Needs

Understanding the intricate requirements of ONPRC’s operations was crucial in implementing the LabKey Server SDMS Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) module effectively. Our platform was designed to bring about a transformation in how ONPRC managed its vast amounts of data, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy. Here’s a look at how the LabKey EHR module made a difference:

Centralized Data Management

The EHR module offered a unified solution for ONPRC, integrating diverse data streams into a single, accessible system. This significantly improved the management of individual and colony-wide animal health records, breeding data, and streamlined administrative and billing processes.

Enhanced Data Accuracy and Real-Time Access

Accuracy and timeliness are critical in animal health management. The EHR provides ONPRC with real-time updates and access to detailed records for each animal, ensuring that decisions regarding animal care, research, and administration are made based on the most current information available.

Simplification of Complex Processes

From administrative tasks to billing procedures, LabKey’s EHR automated and simplified complex processes at ONPRC. The system’s ability to generate accurate, automated billing based on detailed animal data has enhanced the center’s operational efficiency and financial transparency.

Supporting Research and Compliance

LabKey’s EHR supports ONPRC’s research mission by ensuring easy access to comprehensive animal data. This aids in project planning, maintaining regulatory compliance, and managing the health and welfare of the animal colony. Customizable data fields and reporting features allow the system to meet the specific needs of varied research projects.

Facilitating Collaboration

A key benefit of the EHR module is its capacity to foster collaboration. Secure data sharing features enable ONPRC to easily engage with external research partners, enhancing the potential for scientific discovery and innovation.
